Outside the Box

I know everyone thought I was absolutely crazy when I found an antique ring at the mall and wanted it for my engagement ring. It had a garnet in the place of where I wanted a diamond. I guess no one has the vision I did. Turns out, I was totally right. My husband had the garnet replaced with an emerald cut diamond. It blew me away! I was honestly so surprised that he did this on his own with no ones help.

So, that got me thinking. Why do we always think new is better. I used to be one of them. Now, I find that many older things are made with such quality and beauty.

When I got married, I wanted to keep the vintage look. So, I found a pair of vintage chandelier earings. They were stunning. I also found a Weiss broach at a secondhand thrift store that supported battered women. For my bridesmaids, I gave them each a vintage broach I sepecifically picked out for each of them. A friend let me borrow a paif of vintage earings to use as shoe clips on my tiffany blue shoes. See, you can make the old look new and have a look all your own.

We have so many pieces of estate jewelry that have that are one of a kind down at the antique mall. We have earings, rings, bracelets, broaches, cameos, shoe clips, etc. that can make any special occasion be elegant and classy. Come check them out.

Upcycling

What does the term upcycling mean? According to Wikipedia.com, "Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value."

So, you may ask why we are writing about this on our blog so we will answer. Many of the antiques you find today are some that have been upcycled. Take an old beat up chest. It looks ugly, however; it is more environmentally friendly to repaint and reuse. We have so many pieces of furniture in the antique mall that have been upcycled. Me personally, I LOVE the thought of upcycling.

It has been on my mind lately because one of our dealers, Lolly Molly, upcycles and upcycles in a unique way. She is now writing for her local newspaper about creative ways to take "waste" and make it purposeful.

Another reason I am writing this is because another dealer at the antique mall upcycled "waste" on a Christmas tree in a home on the Trussville Christmas Home Tour. (We are trying to learn how to post pics to show you what we mean...bear with us!) She used packing paper from an item she ordered and cut it into strips and made a bow for the top of the Christmas tree. Genius!!!! Why can't all of us think "outside the box".

I challenge you to "think outside the box" and become a little more environmentally friendly in your home decorating.

Let me tell you, she is so talented and her work is astonishing. She is a great teacher and you can learn to make those birthday cakes for that special someone. Who needs to go buy a birthay cake when you can take all the tips your learned from Misty and make your own. Nothing says "I love you" like some love from the kitchen.

We're Back

It has been well over a year since we have blogged. I just realized how amazing a blog can be to a business. Not only can you display new items but also inform customers on the items we have for sale.

We have been so overwhelmed with the amount of new dealers we have in the Trussville Antique Mall. I guess this post is to re-introduce ourselves into the blogging world as well as give you an update about all the exciting things that are happening at the mall.

First and foremost, I need to thank all of the dealers that have been so loyal to the antique mall. We are so fortunate to not only have you as dealers but as friends. Next, I will start by introducing the newest business that have come to the antique mall. One is Mark Taylor. He teaches guitar lessons and sells guitars and guitar equipment. Another is Lisa Bonds. She owned and operated Handbag Studio in Trussville. Now she is doing emrboidary and applique. Her work is fantastic. (I have already got her to do a hanky and now three onesies for my neice) We also have a one of a kind furniture dealer. Chasidy Hathorn opened a booth with creative one of a kind pieces. She lives in Mississippi but loved the TAM (Trussville Antique Mall) enough to put her product in there. Another dealer is 3 Nails. This furniture is something you have to see with your own eyes. It is AMAZING. (pictures to be posted soon) Next, is Laurie Douglas. She is an interior decorator with fine, functional, and natural taste. She just got back from a buying trip. The name of her showroom is Vintage Ruby Designs. You can find her at vintagerubydesigns.com. Last, there are so many other dealers who have moved into the mall. Again, we are so thinkful for each of them.

Last, I would like to remind each of you to remember to shop locally. Many of these dealers are your next door neighbors. Taxes that you pay go directly to your city and schools. It is so important to support local businesses. These are hard working individuals that provide a down home service.

Ok I think I keep saying last but I have so much to mention.....so I guess this is really the LAST thing....for tonight! We will be having a Christmas Open House on December 10, 2011 from 10 am to 6 pm. We will be having goodies and a gift if you spend over $100 (while supplies last).

Remember the best way to de-stress is by spending it at The Trussville Antique Mall!
